At GCHQ, we work together to protect the UK. Only through collaboration can we neutralise threats to the nation, such as cyber-attacks, terrorism and espionage. That means our team is an incredible place to be, as you’ll discover working in Cyber Operations. With constant support, you’ll take on one of our most important and interesting tasks: legally hacking the computers of terrorists and criminals.
It’s vital work, where you’ll be helping to discover and disrupt threats and plans, under strict legal safeguards. It’s also an opportunity to develop your talents and do things that simply aren’t possible elsewhere.
So there’s plenty of variety, covering all manner of skills. You could be gathering intelligence, or disrupting terrorists using software you’ve developed. No matter your project, you’ll use bespoke tools to prevent criminals from harming the UK.
To join, you’ll need to have a real passion for all things cyber. You might have been interested by – or even attended – our Cyber Insights Summer School, which gives a great insight into this role. This opportunity will build on your passion for all things cyber (including any learnings you may have gained through the Summer School), and also offer you even more valuable insights and the chance to build more skills.
We’re looking for creative people with (or be expecting) a 2:2 degree in any STEM subject. Or, you might already be working in a relevant field. But even with your experience, the learning will never stop.
You’ll need to enjoy working in a team environment and value the different perspectives of others. And with an understanding of the drawbacks, as well as the benefits of internet technology, you’ll fit right in. As well as keeping up-to-date with technical developments, you’ll work lawfully, ethically and impartially at all times.

To be eligible to apply, you must be a British Citizen. One of your parents must be a British Citizen or must have the nationality or citizenship from our approved list of countries (further information on our eligibility criteria can be found here). If you hold dual nationality, of which one component is British, you will nonetheless be considered. Candidates must normally have been resident in the UK for seven out of the last ten years. This is particularly important if you were born outside the UK. You can apply at the age of 17 years and 6 months, if successful you will not be offered a start date prior to your 18th birthday.
